WICKS

Brief History

Braided wick was  invented in the 19th century. Wicks before this time were made of twisted strands of cotton  which did not burn very well.   The wick was then soaking in boric acid, which prevents the candle from sputtering.  The tightly plaited wick that we now use turns over as it burns so that it is completely consumed.

Choosing the right wick is one of the most important aspects of candle making.   The wicks very in size according to the width  of  diameter of wax they are going to melt.   Although the way we sell our wicks will give you a rough guide, the diameter will also depend on the melting point of the wax you are using.  For example you will need a larger wick if you add micro - hardener to wax.   You may also want to make a wide candle that keeps a shell as it burns down - for this you will need a smaller wick.
